Powergirl

She hates the little pictures
on my wall
and the others
hanging
in my mind
can't stand her own reminders
the things she can't believe
don't mean the same to me
pouts
wants
but won't tell me
take them down
wants little boxes
to hold a world
segmented
divided
reduced
so she can feel
safe
understand it
unthreatened
unconfused
The other
outer world
immense
noisy
manifold
place
scary there
when stunted thinking
doesn't grasp
Self centered one
believes it's all a plot
everything fraught with hidden motives
lurking snakes
no stories told
no jokes made
that aren't pointed
squarely
at pregnable heart
Feargirl
can't just let it be
smug act
false knowledge
hiding
the bewildered child
Adult minds look like giants
impossibly mature
tolerant
unruffled
not dwelling
on petty things
not worshiping
insignificance
- trusting
letting go
making gestures
These are  unfamiliar things
squeeze them
into little boxes
cut away
what will not fit
point at
shout at
the misshapen thing resulting
blame it
as if it was like that
all along
intending to be so
Sad girl
can't see
all the power
blindly sought
aimed only at making her feel
safety
- defender
deflector
power wasted on a Maginot Line
of the soul
Surety binds
becomes a jail
holds us
from all
best
brilliant
frighteningly glorious
things
we should risk
Just let it be
see
what it becomes
see
what it might have to reveal
Dare to laugh
even in the mirror
let go the shield
allow irony
anger
sex
bliss
danger
Don't react
reign it in
pull it down
make it fit
- Let it cycle
into
then out of
being
All things
happen
then are
for a while
then
pass
Some things
linger
those we can hold
if only
not too tightly
This must be remembered:
it
isn't
all
about
you
